WHITTIER, Calif. (Mar. 25, 2024) – Junior pitcher
Olivia Nunez (Placentia, Calif. / Valencia | Fullerton College) of the Whittier College softball team has been named SCIAC Pitcher of the Week for her string of performances against Williams College and Chapman University over her team's three-game week.
Nunez, a transfer out of Fullerton College, has quickly become one of Head Coach
Trisha Senyo's preferred options on the mound thanks to a sub-2.00 ERA and a level of control rivaled by few pitchers in the conference. She put her command of the strike zone on full display this week, throwing 11 innings without issuing a single free pass. Meanwhile, she also did well to limit the extra-base hits, allowing just two in appearances against the Ephs and Panthers.
Nunez appeared in all three games, and came away with her first two wins of the season. Her first came on Monday against the Ephs, when she entered the fray ahead of the sixth inning and turned in a pair of hitless innings as the Poets put together a successful rally behind her. She then proceeded to throw a complete game against Chapman in her second win of the week, scattering 12 hits across seven innings while surrendering just one earned run. She saved her strongest inning of the week for last, retiring the side one final time against Chapman on less than seven total pitches.
Nunez and the Poets are tentatively scheduled to resume their three-game series with the Panthers on April Fool's Day in Orange, and will also notably host No. 3 Linfield College on Thursday, Mar. 28.
