Zavala Earns Effort Goal Against La Verne

The Poet senior finessed a sneaky ground ball past La Verne’s keeper

WHITTIER, Calif. (Sept. 25, 2024) – Only a handful of soccer goals can bring fans to their feet like a breakaway, so needless to say that when senior Jazey Zavala (Pomona, Calif. / Diamond Ranch / Fullerton College) of the Whittier College men's soccer team took advantage of a loose ball that ricocheted past the University of La Verne's last defender, the Poet faithful rose to their feet. Using his speed and quickness, he was able to put the ball behind the net and give his team an answer to two Leopards goals from earlier in Wednesday night's SCIAC game.

Other Poet highlights of the game included a few well-earned chances notably two header attempts by sophomore Kevin Bravo (Paramount, Calif. / Paramount) — one late in the first half and one late in the second, a powerful strike by freshman Mikael Naesheim (Stavanger, Norway / Hetland) that sent the goalie flying but was just inches high, and another header shot by junior Rowan Slater (Fort Collins, Colo. / Poudre) that came off a tremendously powerful throw-in from star freshman Anthony Dolce (Salt Lake City, Utah / East).

Much of Whittier's offensive opportunities came in a more frenetic second half, with 12 of the Poets' 14 shots coming in that period. The Poets showed an opportunistic side with Zavala's goal and other key chances in the game's waning moments. As to be expected with such a tight game like this, both teams put out a high energy level for the full 90 minutes, resulting in 27 total fouls with just three cards, all of which were attributed to the Leopards.

Sophomore goalkeeper Breckon Robirds (Temecula, Calif. / Chaparral) played the full 90 minutes for the Poets and made four well-timed saves to keep his team in the game.

Head Coach Shea Harwell and the Poets will get another shot at the Leopards later in the season, but in the meantime will look to get back in the win column against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.
