WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 19, 2025) – The Whittier College women's volleyball team opened its cross-country trip in style on Friday, sweeping a pair of opponents at the 18th Annual Worthington Classic hosted by Gallaudet University. The Poets handled the University of Mary Washington in straight sets before turning around to blank the University of Mount Union in the evening match.
Game 1: Whittier 3, Mary Washington 0
In their first meeting with the Eagles since 2013, the Poets controlled the pace from start to finish to earn a clean sweep. Junior middle blocker
Mia D'Amato (Bakersfield, Calif. / Garces) was nearly unstoppable, hitting .471 with eight kills, while sophomore outside hitter
Malena Thé (Chino Hills, Calif. / Chino Hills / Westmont College) set the tone on the wing with 10 kills of her own. Senior outside hitter
Sofia Zazueta (La Mirada, Calif. / Orange Lutheran) added eight kills and anchored the back row with 16 digs.
Whittier's serving and defense were equally sharp, as junior setter Hailey Church (La Habra, Calif. / La Habra) dished out 20 assists and chipped in a service ace, while libero Alyssa Gonzalez (Glendora, Calif. / St. Lucy's Priory) paced the back line with 23 digs. The Poets closed the match with set scores of 25–17, 25–12, and 25–21 to begin their D.C. trip on the right foot.
Game 2: Whittier 3, Mount Union 0
The Poets kept their momentum rolling in the nightcap, sweeping the Purple Raiders in the first-ever meeting between the programs. Thé once again led the way with 13 kills while hitting .265, giving her 23 finishes across the two matches. Zazueta stayed steady with nine more kills and 19 digs, while D'Amato added five kills and two blocks to balance the attack.
Senior setter Sophia Padilla (Fontana, Calif. / St. Lucy's) directed the offense with 16 assists, and Church added 14 helpers of her own. Gonzalez continued her strong weekend, reaching 21 digs in the victory. The Poets closed out the day with a convincing 25–15, 25–17, 25–19 win.
With the two wins, Head Coach Chris Duarte-McDermott's side improved to 7-1 on the season. The Poets continue tournament play on Saturday with a 9 a.m. matchup against No. 18 Hope College, followed by a 1 p.m. contest against the host Gallaudet University Bison.
