CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier Poets traveled to Claremont on Saturday to face the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas in a tightly contested matchup that ended in a 1-0 loss.
Whittier's defense was tested early as the Athenas came out aggressively, attempting five shots within the opening 21 minutes of play.
The Poets held their ground and turned away several early scoring opportunities behind crucial stops and saves from goalkeeper Sofia Lopez.
Whittier began to generate some offensive pressure in the 29th minute when Melissa Tenorio fired a shot that went wide left.
Adina Johnson created another opportunity in the 41st minute, but her attempt missed just right of the goal.
With scoring chances limited throughout the opening half, Mia Cordova made one final attempt before the break, sending a shot over the crossbar.
The Poets returned for the second half determined to maintain their defensive intensity. As the Athenas continued to apply pressure, Whittier remained resilient, making several key stops to keep the match scoreless.
Although offensive opportunities were limited throughout the night, the Poets' defensive effort stood out. Lopez anchored the back line with an impressive 12 saves, keeping Whittier within striking distance.
CMS finally broke through in the 81st minute, finding the back of the net for the match's lone goal. Despite Whittier's efforts to respond, the Athenas held on for the 1-0 victory.
The Poets will look to bounce back on Wednesday, Oct. 21, when they travel to Pasadena to face the CalTech Beavers at 4 p.m. Catch all the action on FloCollege.
