Rodriguez Stays Red Hot as Poets Battle No. 7 Redlands

Sophomore slugger homers again while Contreras and Torres pace the offense in road test

REDLANDS, Calif. (Mar. 28, 2026) – The Whittier College softball team continued SCIAC play on the road Saturday, taking on No. 7 Redlands in the final two games of the weekend series. Despite the results, the Poets saw continued production from key contributors, highlighted by another power surge from Mariah Rodriguez (Barstow, Calif. / Barstow) and steady offensive consistency at the top of the lineup.

Game 1: Redlands 11, Whittier 3 (6 innings)

Whittier jumped on the board early, manufacturing a run in the opening frame as Daniella Contreras (Buena Park, Calif. / John F. Kennedy) crossed the plate on a Rodriguez sacrifice. The Poets continued to apply pressure in the second, capitalizing on defensive miscues to tie the game at 2-2.

After Redlands surged ahead in the bottom half of the inning, Whittier responded once again in the third, this time off the bat of Rodriguez. The sophomore catcher launched a solo home run to right center, marking her fifth long ball in the last seven games and keeping her tied atop the SCIAC leaderboard.

Maya Torres (Lakewood, Calif. / Artesia) paced the Poets offensively with a pair of hits, while Contreras added her 12th double of the season, tying her for the conference lead alongside Rodriguez. In the circle, Aaliyah Garcia (Ontario, Calif. / Colony) provided stability in relief, tossing four innings while limiting further damage and keeping Whittier within reach.

Game 2: Redlands 9, Whittier 0 (5 innings)

Whittier continued to find bright spots offensively in the second game, tallying five hits against a nationally ranked opponent. Freshman Addison Sorto (Los Gatos, Calif. / Los Gatos) led the way with her second career multi-hit performance, going 2-for-2 at the plate.

Contreras and Kelly Nutter (Carlsbad, Calif. / La Costa Canyon / Cal State San Marcos) each added hits, while the Poets remained aggressive on the basepaths with Contreras swiping a bag. Defensively, Whittier turned a double play and showed flashes of clean execution against a potent Redlands lineup.

Head Coach Terry Schweikert and the Poets move to 13-12 overall and 1-5 in SCIAC play. Whittier will continue its road swing on Friday, April 3, traveling to Occidental College for a conference series opener against the Tigers, with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
