WHITTIER, Calif. – Senior midfielder Nicholas Coop was named SCIAC Men's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week after leading the Poets to a 1-0 victory against No. 12 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the team's first conference game of the season.
Coop had a total of three shots on goal, with his final attempt ending up in the back of the net. He scored in the 65th minute after combining with Nils Degardin in the Stags' final third. Degardin played the ball into the box, and Coop did the rest, slipping the ball past the goalie to complete the upset.
The Poets' captain now has two goals on the season, which is tied for the team lead. Whittier is also 1-0 in the SCIAC, which is tied for first.
Coop and the Poets take on the Occidental Tigers in their next matchup on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
