Ameshia Hamlet '11 scored Whittier
College's first goal of the season, but the Poets lost 2-1 to the
University of La Verne in Southern California Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference action at Graham Soccer Field on September
29. The Poets are now 0-9 this season and 0-5 in SCIAC
play.
The only goal in the first half came from the Leopards in the
31st minute of play. Kelly Frey beat Whittier
goalkeeper Lowhren Aceves '10 to give La Verne the
1-0 lead. Aceves made five of her six saves in the first
half. The best first half chance for the Poets came in the
closing minutes of the half, when Brittany Kunz
'09 hit a shot from twenty yards out that bounced off
the crossbar and nearly crossed the goal line.
Neither team would score again until the 85th minute,
when La Verne's Ashley Vanga scored on a breakaway. The Poets
would get on the scoreboard with just one second remaining in the
game, when Hamlet scored on a nice dish from Beth
Waczak '10 to make the final score 2-1.
The Poets are at home for their next contest, a SCIAC match-up with
Occidental College on October 3. The game is scheduled to
begin at 7pm at the Donald E. Graham Soccer Field.
