Whittier College women's soccer remained winless in 2008 after
three losses in SCIAC play to Cal Lutheran, Redlands and
Pomona-Pitzer. The Poets are 0-8 overall and 0-5 in SCIAC
play.
The Poets lost 2-0 at home to Cal Lutheran on September 24.
In one of their better performances of the season, Whittier created
a number of offensive chances and the defense allowed the fewest
goals of any game this season. Goalkeeper Lea Betsworth '12
was a major part of that with six saves, including a crucial
penalty kick save that kept the score at 1-0 in the 78th
minute of the game.
The Regals scored their first goal in the 12th minute of
the game. The first half action was very close with the
Regals taking seven shots to the Poets' five. Cal Lutheran
created more opportunities in the second half with ten shots.
They broke through with some insurance in the 83rd
minute to seal the victory.
The Poets traveled to the University of Redlands for their next
game on September 27, and lost 6-0 to the Bulldogs. Betsworth
made 13 saves while being peppered with 42 shots throughout the
game. Redlands scored twice in the first ten minutes and four
times in the first half.
Whittier then traveled to Pomona-Pitzer for their most recent game
on October 1. The Poets were overmatched again by the SCIAC's
third place team and lost 7-0. After goals in the
11th and 13th minutes, the Sagehens added two
in the final minute of the first half. They went on to finish
the scoring with three goals in the second half. Betsworth
had another valiant effort in goal with eight saves.
The Poets take a break from SCIAC action for a match-up with
Chapman University on October 4. The game kicks off in
Orange, Calif., at 11:00am.
