Keisha O'Brien '10 finished with 31 kills in two matches at UC
Santa Cruz on September 27. The Poets began to tap into their
potential, taking sets against nationally ranked UC Santa Cruz and
Cal State East Bay, but ultimately fell 3-1 to both teams.
Their record falls to 2-11 with the losses.
Against UC Santa Cruz (14-5), the Poets started strong. They
surprised the Banana Slugs in the first set with a 25-23 win.
Santa Cruz countered with wins in the next three sets 25-14,
25-12, 25-15. The Slugs had nine attacking errors in the
first set, but just 10 in the next three. The Poets committed
29 errors in the match.
O'Brien led the way with 16 kills and 11 digs. Frankie
Marshall '12 finished with eight kills. Jennifer Salas '10
had a team-high 12 digs and Sara Araiza '12 was credited with a
team-high 30 assists.
In the second match of the day, the Poets pushed #12 Cal State East
Bay to four sets. The Pioneers took the first two sets easily
25-15 and 25-10. The Poets showed their heart in the third
set, using 12 kills to get the 25-20 win. But East Bay proved
to be one of the top teams in the nation with another convincing
win in the fourth set 25-15.
O'Brien continued her stellar day with 15 kills and seven
digs. Natalie Barajas '10 and Victoria Larios '11 added ten
digs apiece. Araiza finished with 19 assists.
The Poets return to SCIAC action on September 30 when they travel
to Cal Lutheran University. The match begins at 7:30pm.
