Redlands gets best of Poets in conference game

Box Score

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College women's soccer team lost its second straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon, 4-0, to the University of Redlands. The Poets allowed three first half goals but clamped down in the second half to allow just one Bulldog score.

Whittier (2-8-2, 0-6-1 SCIAC) was outshot 23-6 for the game and was on defense for four Redlands' corner kicks. The Poets' defense turned away all four of UR's corner opportunities.

Redlands (7-4, 6-1 SCIAC) scored its first two goals from the combination of Leslie Horner and Maddy Phillips. Phillips scored her fifth and sixth goal of the year in the seventh and 15th minute, respectively, to put the Bulldogs up 2-0.

Breann Puchalski put UR up 3-0 at the 35:59 mark and Kaily Benenati scored the final goal of the game in the 80th minute on a feed from Emily Birzak.

The Poets came close to getting on the scoreboard but a team save preserved the shutout. Chelsea Irha (2 shots) worked hard in the box and hit the post. The rebound found Allie Nicholson whose shot was saved by a Bulldog defender.

Gina-Marie DiPierro made eight saves in the loss.

The Poets return to action on Wednesday, October 14, as they host Pomona-Pitzer at 7 pm.
