WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College
volleyball ran off eight consecutive points in the third set to
earn the win but it wasn't enough as Cal Lutheran hung on for a 3-1
win on Tuesday evening in a Southern California Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference match.
The Poets (7-11, 3-8 SCIAC) dominated play in the third set as
they accounted for 10 combined kills on 29 attempts with only a
pair of errors. The .276 attacking percentage was the highest of
the four sets.
In the three other sets the Poets committed 22 errors and had 19
kills.
Ashley Terich, Vanessa Amran
and Kashima Patridge all provided one service ace
but as a team the purple and gold gave away 14 points on service
errors. Cal Lutheran (14-10, 6-3 SCIAC) had 12 aces with seven
services errors.
Ana Nakano tallied a game-high 15 kills while
Amran totaled 23 assists. Justine Martinez,
Natalie Barajas and Nakano all finished with
double-digits in digs with 18, 11 and 11, each, respectively.
Whittier had 8.0 team blocks with Michelle
Gayhart, Shannon Orlins and Patridge all
adding one solo block. The Regals has 6.5 team blocks but on three
occasions went up with three defenders and forced Poet errors.
CLU won the match 25-16, 25-13, 17-25, 25-15.
Whittier returns to action this weekend as they travel to the
New York, N.Y., to take part in the City College of New York
Tournament on Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24. WC will
play four matches against Clark (Mass.), Mt. Aloysius, City College
(N.Y.) and Richard Stockton.
