WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College
volleyball team took the first set from Pomona-Pitzer on Tuesday
evening but it wasn't enough. The Sagehens battled back and won the
next three sets to take the match, 3-1, at the Graham Athletics
Center.
The Poets (4-7, 2-5 SCIAC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-23
win in the first set. Whittier totaled 10 kills to Pomona's nine
and had two fewer attempts than their opponent, 46-48. Both teams
committed 11 attacking errors.
The second and third sets were as close. The Sagehens combined
to commit only four errors (two in each set) and had attacking
percentages of .240 and .333, respectively, as they took a 2-1
lead. The second set score was 25-15 and the third set was 25-17.
The purple and gold had its opportunity to force and fifth and
final set but couldn't close the door on Pomona. Whittier held a
20-16 advantage but was outscored 9-4 over the final 13 points en
route to the loss.
The third set final was 25-23.
Aya Nakano had a match-high 17 kills and
Shannon Orlins added 13. Vanessa
Amran took her season total to 236 assists with 34 on the
night. Nakano and Ashley Terich each had 18 digs
while Natalie Barajas had 17, Amran had 14 and
Katie Sharpe had 10.
As a team the Poets had an attacking percentage of .025.
Orlins had the only block solo for the Poets and added a block
assist with Terich.
Pomona-Pitzer had nine total team blocks which includes 16 block
assists.
The Poets have a short turnaround as they travel to face La
Sierra tomorrow, October 7, at 7 pm. The Poets defeated LSU, 3-0,
earlier this year.
