LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Whittier College
women's soccer team scored the first goal of the game just 8:46
into the first half but Occidental rattled off seven straight
scores over the remainder of the game en route to a 7-1 win over
the Poets on Wednesday afternoon.
Chelsea Irha finished the game with four shots,
all on goal, and had the lone score of the afternoon for the purple
and gold. Her score was her team-leading fourth of the season.
Occidental (5-4, 3-3 SCIAC) scored the game's equalizer in the
19th minute and tallied the game winner at 49:25. Lei Song had the
first two Tiger goals. Oxy earned a penalty kick in the 52nd minute
to extend its lead to 3-1 and scored its second goal off a corner
kick at 54:55.
The Tigers pushed its lead to 5-1 at 74:37 and scored
back-to-back goals within an NCAA record five seconds of each other
en route to the six-goal win.
Oxy scored at 83:23 and added its final goal of the game at
83:28.
The previous record for fastest consecutive goals by the same
team was set on October 4, 1994. Scranton scored twice in seven
seconds against Delaware Valley.
Gina-Marie DiPierro, who was recently named the
SCIAC Female Athlete of the Week, made seven saves in the loss.
The Poets return to action on Saturday, October 10, at 11 am
against Redlands.
