WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College women's basketball team shot over 55 percent from the field for the game and forced 18 Pacific Union turnovers as the Poets cruised to their third straight win with a lopsided 95-44 win over the Pioneers on Sunday night at the Graham Athletics Center.

The Poets (3-0) were led by Brittany Aranda who scored a game-high 16 points and pulled in four rebounds with a pair of assists. Aranda poured in 12 points in the first half as she helped the Poets to a 44-25 halftime lead.

Pacific Union (1-4) shot 52 percent from the field in the first half but was held to just 24 percent in the final 20 minutes. The Poets allowed just 19 points to the Pioneers in the second half.

The defensive pressure by the Poets was responsible for over half of the Pacific Union turnovers and led to 39 points for Whittier. The purple and gold outscored the Pioneers 39-5 off turnovers.

Kourtney Zilbert finished with a game-high five steals while Melissa Johnson had four.

In all the Poets had four players reach double figures for the game. Morgan Sabala finished with 15 points and had six assists and three steals while Johnson and Tina Merlino each scored 10 points and grabbed four and six rebounds each, respectively.
