WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College women's
soccer team was able to extend their unbeaten streak to three games
on Thursday evening with a 1-1 tie against La Sierra. The last time
the Poets were able to notch a three game unbeaten streak was
during the 2003 season, when the poets defeated Claremont-M-S on
October 25.
The tie moves Poets to 2-0-1 on the season while La Sierra
notches their second tie of the season moving their record to
0-0-2.
La Sierra's Fanny Rivera snuck the first goal of the game past
Whittier keeper Rachel Betsworth off of a long
pass by Marisol Del Toro with 2:03 left in the half.
Whittier was able to tie the game early in the second half when
Breeann Yamada buried a penalty shot in the 59th
minute.
WC and La Sierra fired of four shots in the two overtime periods
but neither team was able to muster a goal to seal an overtime
victory.
Whittier outshot La Sierra 24-17 lead by Andrea
Smith with four shots including two on goal. Alli Roque
led La Sierra with five shots, one of which was on goal.
Both goalkeepers turned in solid efforts. Whittier's Betsworth
turned away six shots and La Sierra's Desiree Wood came up with 10
saves.
The Poets return to action on Saturday, September 12, when they
host Chapman University at 11 a.m.
