WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College women's
soccer team ended Chapman's three-game shutout streak but it wasn't
enough as the Panthers held on for a 3-1 win at the Donald E.
Graham Soccer Field on Saturday morning.
The Poets (2-1-1) got off to a slow start as Chapman (4-0)
scored just 19 seconds into the contest off a strike from Kate
Lilly.
Whittier settled down and held the Panthers scoreless until the
45th minute when CU extended its lead to 2-0. Bree Sasaki scored
her first goal of the game off a rebound on a save by Whittier
starting keeper Lea Betsworth (6 saves).
The Sasaki goal came with 22 seconds left before the
intermission.
The Panthers were able to add to its lead in the 58th
minute when Aimee Evans found Stephanie Lambrakis to give Chapman
the three-goal advantage.
The purple and gold didn't stop and found the back of the net in
the 83rd minute. Ameshia Hamlet played a long ball
to Chelsea Irha who slipped by a diving
Chole Canta (1 save) for the open net score.
Chapman outshot the Poets 20-7 for the game and put 10 shots on
goal to WC's two. The purple and gold held the advantage in corner
kicks (3-2) and total saves (7-1).
Betsworth's record drops to 2-1-1 in goal for the Poets and
Canta improved to 4-0 on the year.
Whittier returns to action on Wednesday, September 16, as it
travels to face Redlands in its Southern California Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference opener at 7 pm.
