REDLANDS, Calif. - The Whittier College women's
soccer team played hard but fell just short of earning its first
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory of
the year. The Poets dropped a 1-0 decision to the defending
conference champions, Redlands, on Wednesday evening at Farquhar
Field.
Whittier (2-2-1, 0-1 SCIAC) was outshot by a 39-5 margin.
Despite the lopsided shots, Whittier only allowed Redlands (2-3,
1-0 SCIAC) to put four of those shots on goal.
Lea Betsworth made saves on three of the four
Bulldog shots on goal but UR snuck the lone goal of the game by
Betsworth in the 20th minute.
The Poets put pressure on Redlands in the 53rd minute. Whittier
got off two shots, one on goal, but couldn't find the equalizer.
Allie Nicholson's shot from the left wing was
turned away by UR goalie Tenley Rawlings (2
saves).
Amanda Martinez's attempt in the 81st minute
was also saved by Rawlings.
The Poets return to action on Saturday, September 19, as they
travel to face Pomona-Pitzer at 11 am.
