WHITTIER, Calif. - Amanda Martinez notched the
first goal of the game just 1:46 into the second half but it wasn't
enough as back-to-back strikes by La Verne in the 51st and 64th
minute proved the difference in Whittier's Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Wednesday evening.
The Poets (2-4-1) held their SCIAC foe scoreless for the first
50 minutes of the contest. Falisha Ramirez put the Leopards (2-2,
1-2 SCIAC) on the board at the 50:51 mark and later found the
eventual game-winner at the 63:34 mark as the Poets fell, 2-1, to
La Verne.
Whittier had an opportunity in the final stages of the game to
tie the score with a corner at the 87:39 mark. Briana
Johnson played the ball to the center of the box and a
cutting Chelsea Irha but La Verne's starting
keeper, Caitlin Kams, smothered the ball before Irha could get a
clean strike.
That proved to be Whittier's last look at net as the Leopards
held on for the one-goal win.
WC held the advantage in corner kicks for the game, 5-4.
La Verne got off several shots (28) but only put eight on goal.
Lea Betsworth made six saves for the game.
The Poets return to action on Saturday, September 26, as they
host Cal Lutheran in a SCIAC match-up at 11 am.
