WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College women's
soccer team dropped its fourth straight Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon,
3-0, to Cal Lutheran. The Regals scored twice in the first half
before they iced the game with one second half strike.
The Poets (2-5-1, 0-4 SCIAC) got a great effort from goalie
Lea Betsworth who made eight saves on the
afternoon. Her most impressive came on a penalty kick in the 81st
minute.
Cal Lu (6-1, 2-1 SCIAC) put 11 shots on net to Whittier's three
and had 12 more total shots that the Poets (20-8).
Chelsea Irha had a couple of runs towards net
but the Regals defense denied her a clean look at the net. She led
Whittier with two shots.
CLU's Laura Brain came away with a pair of saves in the game.
Shelly Johiro almost put the purple and gold on
the board in the 85th minute. She took the ball in the middle of
the box, past the keeper but as she went to put the ball towards
the open net a defender kept Cal Lutheran's shutout intact.
The Regals scored their first goal of the game on a corner kick
at the 7:10 mark. CLU totaled seven corners for the game and scored
only once.
CLU held a 2-0 lead at the half.
The Poets return to action on Wednesday, September 30, as they
host Claremont-M-S at 7 pm.
