Poets fall in conference tilt to Cal Lu, 3-0

Box Score

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College women's soccer team dropped its fourth straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon, 3-0, to Cal Lutheran. The Regals scored twice in the first half before they iced the game with one second half strike.

The Poets (2-5-1, 0-4 SCIAC) got a great effort from goalie Lea Betsworth who made eight saves on the afternoon. Her most impressive came on a penalty kick in the 81st minute.

Cal Lu (6-1, 2-1 SCIAC) put 11 shots on net to Whittier's three and had 12 more total shots that the Poets (20-8).

Chelsea Irha had a couple of runs towards net but the Regals defense denied her a clean look at the net. She led Whittier with two shots.

CLU's Laura Brain came away with a pair of saves in the game.

Shelly Johiro almost put the purple and gold on the board in the 85th minute. She took the ball in the middle of the box, past the keeper but as she went to put the ball towards the open net a defender kept Cal Lutheran's shutout intact.

The Regals scored their first goal of the game on a corner kick at the 7:10 mark. CLU totaled seven corners for the game and scored only once.

CLU held a 2-0 lead at the half.

The Poets return to action on Wednesday, September 30, as they host Claremont-M-S at 7 pm.
