The Whittier College volleyball team set a new
season-high for digs in a match on Tuesday evening but it wasn't
enough as Chapman University handed the Poets their fourth straight
loss, 3-0, at the Hutton Sports Center in front of a crowd of 115.
The Poets (3-5, 1-3 SCIAC) totaled 67 digs led by
Victoria Larios who had a season-beast 19. Prior
to this match the high total for the purple and gold was 52 digs in
a three set match against Lewis & Clark on September 5.
Aya Nakano and Natalie Barajas
each hit double-digits in setting the season-high with 13 and 12
digs each, respectively.
The Panthers (9-7) took the first set 25-15 as it totaled 10
kills to Whittier's seven. The Poets had a negative attacking
percentage while Chapman had a percentage of .073.
WC had more kills than Chapman in the second set (10-8) but the
purple and gold committed eight errors to CU's three. Both teams
saw their attacking percentage rise as Whittier finished at 0.51
and Chapman at .152.
The final set was the cleanest of the match as the teams
combined for 27 kills and 103 attempts. The Panthers took the set
25-19 to complete the sweep.
Shannon Orlins, who had a team-high 2.5 blocks
(1 solo, 3 assisted) led the team with nine kills on 28 attempts.
She also added six digs. Nakano chipped in with six kills and
Vanessa Amran led the team with 15 assists.
The Poets return to action Friday, October 2, as they host SCIAC
rival Occidental at 7:30 pm.
