WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College women's
basketball team was held to a season-low 39 points and shot 25
percent from the field for the game on Thursday evening at the
Graham Athletics Center as Redlands snapped WC's five game home win
streak, 61-39, to remain unbeaten in conference play.
The last loss for the Poets (10-6, 3-2 SCIAC) on Dave Jacobs
Court came on December 3 to Lewis & Clark during the Tiger/Poet
Challenge.
Whittier struggled all evening finding easy buckets. The
Bulldogs (13-3, 5-0 SCIAC) held the SCIAC's top scoring offense to
just six points over the first 10 minutes of the game and opened an
11-point lead midway through the first half.
The Poets outscored Redlands 11-8 over the remainder of the half
and went into intermission down 25-17.
WC got as close as eight points three times within the first six
minutes of the second half but never got closer. Kourtney
Zilbert cut the deficit to 34-26 with 14:16 to play but
Redlands scored six points over the next 30 seconds to stretch its
advantage to 14 points.
Zilbert finished with a team-high 11 points, all of which came
in the second half, and six rebounds.
The Poets continued to try and climb back into the game as
Ashante Reid converted the old fashion three-point
play to make the score 42-33. That proved to be as close as the
Poets would get over the final 10 minutes.
The Bulldogs closed the game on a 19-6 run en route to the
22-point win.
Whittier connected on just 15-of-58 shots while the Bulldogs
finished the game at 47 percent. Redlands controlled the glass to
the tune of 47-26.
Brittany Aranda scored nine points and had six
rebounds in the loss. Zilbert added a game-high five steals.
The Poets return to action on Saturday, January 23, as it
travels to Claremont, Calif., to face Claremont-M-S at 5 pm.
