WHITTIER, Calif. – Homecoming weekend was
a good one for the Whittier College women's soccer team as
the Poets earned the season sweep of the University of La Verne
behind a 1-0 win on Saturday morning at the Graham Soccer
Field.
Despite only finding the back of the net one time, the Poets
(4-7-2, 2-6-1 SCIAC) got off 20 shots for the game; eight of which
were on target.
The game winner came from Shelly Johiro who
netted her second goal of the season off a corner kick in the
second half. Johiro took the corner and bent the ball to the middle
of the goal. ULV keeper Caitlin Kams couldn't make the play
on the ball and it bounced off the cross bar and over the goal
line.
The official time on the goal was 53:36.
Johiro matched a game-high four shots while Emma
Krieger and Chelsea Irha each got off
three.
Whittier was outshot 10-5 in the first half but turned the
tables to the tune of a 15-4 second frame. The Leopards (1-9-1,
0-7-1 SCIAC) put six shots on target, all of which were turned away
by Megan Wessel.
The win today snaps the Poets' four game losing skid and
is the first goal for the purple and gold since it scored twice in
a 2-2 tie with Occidental.
The Poets have a quick turnaround as they host Marymount
(Calif.) at 7 pm on Monday.
