WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College
women's soccer team battled back from a 2-0 halftime deficit
to earn a 2-2, double overtime, tie with Occidental College on
Wednesday evening at the Graham Soccer Field.
The Poets (3-3-2, 1-2-1 SCIAC) entered the game having scored
all four of its goals from different players. The tide was no
different this evening as Stephanie Bergstrom and
Anna Edwards each collected their first scoring
strike.
Bergstrom's goal started with Emma Krieger who found Breeann Yamada in the
center of the field. Yamada played a ball to the top of the box
where Bergstrom fired a shot past Occidental keeper Robin Feldman
to the far post. The goal came at 62:00.
The Poets capitalized on a throw-in from deep in their offensive
third to find the equalizer in the 83rd minute.
Lauren Velasquez corralled the ball at the
corner of the box and played a cross to Edwards who struck the ball
on her first touch.
Velasquez now leads the team with two assists while Yamada
picked up her first helper on the year.
Megan Wessel put forth a solid effort in goal.
She made 12 saves which includes four in the first overtime
period.
Occidental outshot the Poets 25-7 for the game but was held
scoreless in the final 65 minutes.
Whittier finished the game with four corner kicks, three of
which came in the first 10 minute overtime.
The Poets return to action on Saturday afternoon as they travel
to Thousand Oaks, Calif., to clash with Cal Lutheran at 1 pm.
