Whittier, Calif. – Coming off of their first win of the season, Head Coach Monica Gerardo and the rest of the women's soccer team were poised to get their second win of the season over the visiting Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer.
After rain postponed this game last week, Whittier was ready to play under a clear night sky in front of a fan base of almost 150, but Pomona came out the aggressor winning the SCIAC match-up 2-1.
For the game Pomona outshot Whittier 11-7 but the Poets had opportunities throughout the contest.
The game began as a defensive standoff until Allie Tao in the 34th minute dribbled past a Poet defender and around an outstretched Shanna Falch to tap in the first goal of the contest into the bottom right portion of the goal to give Pomona a 1-0 lead.
But no lead is safe in the Donald E. Graham Soccer Field as the Poets came battling back to tie up the game at one a piece as freshman Madison Shipherd got a through ball from Lauren Velasquez that she was able to take and dribble up into the box and around an outstretched Pomona goalkeeper Emma Wolfarth to tap in her third goal of the season.
Minutes before the first half concluded, Allison Calabrese managed to get off a shot that barely missed high, while Shipherd continued to get looks at the goal as she too took a shot that barely missed wide.
Three minutes before the intermission, Pomona's Traci Lopez put the Sagehens up 2-1 as she got a ball from Tao who sent a ball into the box that ricocheted off of a Poet defender that she was able to tap in.
In the second half, it was a standoff as Whittier was searching for the equalizer, while Pomona was seeking their seventh win on the season. Even with the Poet attack that took place in the second half that included three shots on goal, the Sagehens managed to slip away with a 201 victory.
For the game Falch had five saves, while Wolfarth collected two.
Whittier returns to action as they travel to take on the Panthers of Chapman University on Wednesday, October 12 beginning at 5pm.
