WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's soccer team who is coming off of a strong offensive performance against the Athena's of Claremont-M-S was unable to get on the board against the Regals of Cal Lutheran University Saturday morning as they fell 4-0.
The previous time these two teams met, Whittier got outscored 12-1, but as of late the Poets have been playing very well on both sides of the ball and have been playing together as a team. The team has been making big improvements over the last few weeks and still looks to become a spoiler in the final week of action.
It was a tough, physical contest all game long and the coaches, spectators, and players were fired up and you could tell as a combined 24 fouls were called for the game including two yellows that came late in the second half.
The Regals for the game outshot the Poets 17-4 and got on the scoreboard first in the second minute of play as Jen Jones received a corner kick from Sinead Vaughan that she knocked in with a header.
The Poets were then unlucky as the Regals scored two more times in a minute helping them lead 3-0 going into the half.
In the second half, Whittier came out aggressively and Shelly Johiro had a great look on goal in the 62nd minute as Allison Calabrese sent in a cross from just outside of the box that Johiro attempted to head in but the Regal goalkeeper Tina Hedwell was there to make the diving stop.
The Poets had a second good opportunity four minutes later but was unable to convert as senior Chelsea Irha received a ball in the box that she put on goal but Hedwell was there to make the stop.
The last attempt Whittier had to get back into the contest was from freshman Madison Shipherd who took a ball deep into Regal territory but missed her shot high.
Cal Lutheran added a late goal in the second half that put them up 4-0 helping them earn the victory.
Shipherd led the Poets as she took two shots with one being on goal.
The Purple and Gold return to action as they take on the Tigers of Occidental College on Wednesday, October 26 beginning at 7pm.
