LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Whittier College women's soccer team was held scoreless Saturday afternoon as they dropped a 1-0 decision to the Tigers of Occidental College at Lower Field.
Whittier now drops to 5-9, 3-7 SCIAC and finishes the 2012 season matchup with Oxy in a split after taking the first game by the score of 3-1 back on September 19.
Whittier had an opportunity early to get on the scoreboard first in the 10th minute when Maegan Garcia received a through ball from Allison Calabrese, but it missed wide right.
The game remained scoreless until the Tigers were able to find the back of the net in the 79th minute when Whitney Roline finished a cross put in by Michaela Tsuha that gave Oxy the eventual game winner.
The Tigers outshot the Poets for the game 21-6 and held the advantage in shots on goal at 8-3 and all but one shot was turned away by Poet goalkeeper Shanna Falch who recorded seven saves.
In the 57th minute, Roline had her first crack on goal with a shot from inside the box that Falch saved. Less than 10 minutes later, Roline had the best opportunity yet in the 64th minute. She fielded a cross from Garcia at the back post, but her shot at the open net sailed over the bar.
For the remainder of the game, Oxy continued to play aggressively on both ends of the field forcing the Poets to take strikes from long ranges, which made it difficult for the Purple & Gold to find the equalizer.
Whittier returns home for a two game home stand when they host Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday, October 17 at 7:00pm before wrapping up their final home game of 2012 with Cal Lutheran on Saturday, October 20.
