Poets drop three-set decision to Athena's

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College volleyball team dropped their second straight SCIAC contest as they fell in three sets 20-25, 25-27, 11-25 to the Athena's of Claremont-M-S Saturday morning dropping their record to 6-5, 1-2 SCIAC.

With the win, Claremont-M-S improves to 10-2, 3-1 SCIAC. 

A day after Friday night's tough three set loss to the Tigers of Occidental College, the Poets were unable to sustain any kind of momentum against the Athena's.  As a team, Whittier hit .066 for the match, the teams lowest attack percentage of the season as it recorded 31 kills to go with 23 errors. 

Senior Alyssa Sialaris led the Poets with nine kills while junior Alayna Rigo chipped in with eight, but no other Poet recorded more than six.  Sialaris also had nine digs, while Rigo finished with 11. 

Freshman setter Torrey Mitsunaga finished the morning with eight assists her lowest total on the season, while senior Victoria Larios finished with nine.  In the back row defensive specialist Alyssa Acosta had a team high 14 digs her highest total this season.

Claremont-M-S's Regina Mullen finished with a game high 13 kills as the Athena's hit .209 as a team over the three sets.   Taylor Jones finished with a game and season high 33 assists, while Megan Coleman and Regina Mullen finished with 18 and 14 assists, each respectively. 

The Purple & Gold remain on the road as they travel to take on the Panthers of Chapman University on Friday, September 28 beginning at 7:30pm.
