WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's soccer team lost a hard-fought match to Pomona-Pitzer, 1-0, on Wednesday night at the Donald E. Graham Soccer Field.
The Sagehens scored the lone goal of the contest at the 6:50 mark in the first half from Agueda Dudley Berrios who tapped in a cross from Danika Bethune. Dudley Berrios knocked in her shot from about ten yards out just past the outstretched arms of Poet freshman goalkeeper Alexi Cruz.
Wednesday night was statistically the best game of the young season for Cruz, as the Long Beach, Calif. native recorded a season high 14 saves with 11 of them coming in a scoreless second frame. Madison Shipherd (Whittier, Calif.) finished with a team high four shots with three being on goal which included a strike from just inside the top of the box at the end of the second half, which would have tied the game up.
On the evening Pomona-Pitzer held the advantage in shots (28-5) and corner kicks (11-0) but by the latter stages of the game the Poets were still threatening and playing tough soccer making it difficult for the Sagehens to get any breathing room but in the end the ball couldn't find the back of the goal for the equalizer keeping the WC women's soccer program shutout for the eighth time this season.
The Poets return to the pitch this Saturday, October 5 when they travel to La Verne to take on the Leopards beginning at 7:00pm.
