LA MIRADA, Calif. – Two teams searching for their first win this season faced off against each other Tuesday night but the Eagles of Biola University came out on top winning 74-56 moving the women's basketball team's losing skid to seven games.
Biola came into the contest 0-10, a start, which is one of their worst in the program's history, while Whittier came into the game 0-6, their worst start since the 1989-90 season when the team finished 0-24.
The Poets came out of the gates quickly getting a layup from Danielle Hays (San Diego, Calif.) and a free throw from Ashley Genie (Whittier, Calif.) but the Eagles stormed right back with a 15-0 run capped off with a three pointer from Khadidja Diakite, while never looking back holding the Poets to just 15 points in the first half, capitalizing on Whittier's 27 turnovers with 31 points, winning the battle on the glass 40-32 and holding the advantage in the paint 32-16.
Midway through the first, Biola used another double digit run to extend their lead to 24 points, helping them obtain a 36-15 advantage at the break. Out of the half, Whittier came out firing on all cylinders outscoring the Eagles 41-38 with eight points coming from Danielle Quinones (Marin County, Calif.) and Genie. WC trailed by 20 points a majority of the second half before finding a spark with two minutes to play when they closed out regulation on a 10-2 but it would be a little too late as they would fall by eighteen dropping them to 0-7 on the season.
Hays was the lone Poet in double figures finishing with 12 points with eight coming from the charity stripe, to go with seven boards and a career high four blocks. Quinones and Genie each tallied nine points apiece with Dannika Navales-Lugtu (San Francisco, Calif.) and Carly Buechler (Greenwood Village, CO) each finishing with seven.
For Biola, Adijat Adams led all scorers finishing with 24 points on 9-13 shooting along with 16 boards, while Elizabeth Munger chipped in with 14 points on 5-6 shooting off the bench.
Whittier returns to conference action when they travel to Orange, Calif. this Saturday, December 14 when they take on Chapman University beginning at 5:00pm.
