WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Whittier College women's soccer team wrapped up their trip to Washington D.C. Sunday morning as they took on Catholic University but was unable to come away with the victory as they fell 3-0.
Whittier continues to seek their first victory of 2013 and has been held scoreless in their last four contests. After a scoreless first half Catholic added three in the second en route to the victory.
Kate Masson got the Cardinals scoring started first on an unassisted goal, as she collected a short clear from the Whittier goalie then sailed a shot just over her head to put her team up 1-0 less than five minutes into the second half.
Catholic kept pressuring the Poet's backline as Kirsten Wosleger fired a shot at Alexi Cruz (Long Beach, Calif.), who made the save but gave up a rebound. Jennifer Delasco was lurking in the box and able to put away the loose ball at the 77:28 mark.
Kaylre Greaves finished up the scoring for the Cardinals as Alyssa Fiore led a 2-on-1 attack into Poet territory. In the 83rd minute, Fiore was able to draw Cruz out of position and find Greaves just inside the 18 who finished on an open net for the third and final goal of the game.
Whittier was outshot 12-7 and saw Catholic hold a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks. Kirsten Davis (Hilo, HI) led the Poet offense finishing with three shots with all three being on goal. Madison Shipherd (Whittier, Calif.) finished with two shots.
The Poets return home tomorrow when they begin preparing for SCIAC competition. They remain on the road and take on Occidental College (Wednesday, September 18 @ 7:00pm) and then Cal Lutheran (Saturday, September 21 @ 1:00pm).
