WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's soccer team found their offense Saturday evening but it wasn't enough to upend the Bulldogs as the Poets fell 3-1 at the Donald E. Graham Soccer Field.
Whittier has been shutout for the past seven games but found their offensive spark once again as junior midfielder Madison Shipherd (Whittier, Calif.) found the back of the goal in the 31st minute totaling three on the season.
Shipherd dribbled past two defenders into the middle of the box and put one on frame finding the top right corner of the goal that cut the Poet deficit in half.
Redlands struck first with a goal from Tanya Haggen who took a shot from way outside the box, which floated over WC keeper Alexi Cruz (Long Beach, Calif.). The Bulldogs would then come down fourteen minutes later and would tally their second from Savannah Laursen who capitalized on a take down in the box eventually putting away the PK.
After Shipherds goal that pulled WC within one Redlands responded on their next possession less than a minute later from Kristen Arroyo who dribbled up the near side and put a shot on goal, which edged past Cruz, off the side post and in, which put UR up 3-1 heading into intermission.
Out of the break, the game picked up physically with three yellow cards being issued. The Poets had an opportunity to pull within one late in the frame after Shipherd sent in a free kick that forced Redlands keeper Lexi Felix to flirt with the goal crease but a crucial no call proved costly allowing UR to escape with the two goal victory.
Shipherd finished with six shots with four being on goal, while Ashlin Steele (San Diego, Calif.), Courtney Maddux (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Danielle Kwasniowski (Las Vegas, NV) each recorded one.
Whittier returns to action as they host Pomona-Pitzer, Tuesday, October 2 beginning at 7:00pm.
