THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Whittier College women's soccer team broke their scoreless streak in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) games Wednesday but it wouldn't be enough to upset the Regals of Cal Lutheran University as they fell 3-1.
Again playing without Madison Shipherd (Whittier, Calif.) and freshman Lauren Kai (Torrance, Calif.) the Poets were still able to hold the Regals to just a goal on nine shots in the first half. Whittier was outshot for the game 24-1 and had a corner kick that came in the second half.
Cal Lutheran would add another two in the second half, with the final goal coming on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute.
The bright spot came a minute later for the Purple & Gold from Leila Afrasiyabi (Los Angeles, Calif.) who found the back of the net for her second goal of the season. She would take a deep shot from way outside the box and with Regal goalie Kiki Bailey coming up high, the ball was able to be sent over her head and into the back of the net.
In goal, freshman Caitlyn Schrepfer (Placentia, Calif.) had her best game of the season finishing with 10 saves playing all ninety minutes.
Whittier returns to the field this Saturday, October 4 when they travel to Claremont, Calif. to take on Pomona-Pitzer beginning at 11:00am.
