LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Whittier College women's soccer team let their road contest against Occidental College slip away Saturday as they fell 1-0 despite hanging tough with the Tigers all game long.
Abigail Mitchell would provide the game winner in the 76th minute coming on a free kick to send the Tigers to the victory at Lower Field. She capitalized on a set piece from 35 yards out. Her shot hit the crossbar just passed the outstretched fingers of Whittier keeper Alexi Cruz (Long Beach, Calif.) and went straight down breaking the goal line crease.
Whittier was outshot on the morning 14-3 with none being on goal. They did have the advantage on corner kicks with nine and was led on offense with a shot apiece from Maegan Garcia (Hacienda Heights, Calif.), Dana Bergstrom (Riverside, Calif.), and Blaire Persell (Temecula, Calif.).
Cruz got her first start in goal in conference play and played spectacular finishing with six saves against seven shots allowing just the one goal.
Whittier returns to action this Wednesday, October 15 when they take on Claremont-M-S beginning at 7:00pm.
