CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College women's soccer team was shutout Wednesday evening as they fell 5-0 to the Athena's of Claremont-M-S.
The Poets surrendered three goals in the first half and two goals in the second half to CMS en route to their 12th loss on the season.
Two of CMS' goals were from corner kicks in the second half. Isabel Lester took both kicks from the left corner, delivering it precisely to her teammates. Darrah Shields scored the first goal of the second half with a header from Lester's serve from the corner. For the fifth and final of the Athenas' goals, Katelyn Faust passed to Sara Tweedy who buried it in the back of the net to put the final touches on the victory.
Faust scored herself in the 37th minute. Of the 21 shots taken by her team, Faust had six, one of which missed high by only an inch.
The Athenas had a free kick opportunity in the first half that Shields knocked in for a goal after a beautiful ball from Samantha Kunz.
Ashley Barnhill, who was assisted by sophomore Makella Brems scored the goal that started it all in the 20th minute.
Whittier was outshot on the evening 21-3 and had one corner compared to CMS' five. Marisa Arvizu (Montebello, Calif.), Kaela Reisfelt (Castaic, Calif.), and Blaire Persell (Temecula, Calif.) each recorded shots with only one being on goal.
The Poets return home to the Graham Soccer Field this Saturday, October 18 during Homecoming Weekend when they host Chapman University beginning at 11:00am.
