LA VERNE, Calif. – The Whittier College women's soccer team saw their 2014 season come to a close Saturday evening as they fell 2-0 to the Leopards of the University of La Verne.
Whittier finishes the year 1-17-1, 0-14 SCIAC, while La Verne improved to 7-10-1, 5-8-1 SCIAC.
Again it was a story of two halves with the Poets surrendering two first half goals before holding the Leopards scoreless in the second. Alexa Smith added the first goal in the 16th minute before Tatiana Raygoza would add insurance right before the half.
The Poets would be outshot 15-3 on the evening and grabbed just three corners.
Leah Kolek (Diamond Bar, Calif.), Maegan Garcia (Hacienda Heights, Calif.), and Sofia Garcia (Bonita, Calif.) each took shots with none being on goal.
Freshman Caitlyn Schrepfer (Placentia, Calif.) was called on early in goal as she was tested by Jamie Weaver collecting three of her seven saves on the evening within the first 27 minutes.
Late in the second La Verne's Alexa Smith was sent off with two yellow cards giving the Purple & Gold a man-up advantage in the final 29:00 but they were unable to capitalize as they would get off a mere two shots from that point.
Head Coach Monica Gerardo has combined for nine wins in four seasons but looks to come back strong in 2015 when she welcomes back Madison Shipherd (Whittier, Calif.) and Lauren Kai (Torrance, Calif.), while putting together a strong incoming class that can help balance the offensive attack.
