WHITTIER, Calif. – In heat that got over 100 degrees Sunday, the Whittier College women's soccer team was unable to pull off the victory over Lewis & Clark as they fell 3-1 to drop to 1-3-1 following non-conference play.
The Pioneers got on the scoreboard first in the 29th minute from Kylie Carera, who was fed a through ball from Rochelle Jordan who then carried it into the box placing it past a diving Alexi Cruz (Long Beach, Calif.).
Out of the half the Purple & Gold would add the equalizer six minutes in coming from sophomore Leila Afrasiyabi (Los Angeles, Calif.) who found the ball at her feet in the box coming from Madison Shipherd (Whittier, Calif.) from the wing.
But late in the half, Lewis & Clark managed to add the go ahead goal at the 68:18 mark from Emily Thompson who took a shot, which ricocheted off the post and back to the forward who connected on her second chance.
A minute later, Shipherd had a look on a goal to even the game up once more but Pioneer goalie Geena Fong came up with a huge save that kept the one goal differential intact. In the 78th minute, the Pios would continue with their pressure and would put the game out of reach when Jordan headed in a corner kick coming from Megan Ratfield moving the score to 3-1.
Whittier was outshot 16-11 for the game but held a huge advantage on corner kicks 10-6. Shipherd led the offense with five shots with two being on goal and an assist, while Cruz finished with seven saves between the posts.
The Poets open up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play this Wednesday, September 17 when they host Occidental at 7:00pm.
