CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Soccer team saw their two game winning streak snapped Wednesday evening as they were shutout at Pritzlaff Field falling 2-0 to the Athena's of Claremont-M-S.

The first 15 minutes were fairly quiet as a majority of the match was played in the neutral third. In the 26th minute, CMS had an opportunity to go in front from Darrah Shields who tried to connect on a low cross deep in the crease but couldn't take advantage of Alexi Cruz (Long Beach, Calif.) who was scrambling back into position.

The Athena's got another opportunity right before the half as they capitalized on a yellow card from Leah Kolek (Diamond Bar, Calif.) who was called for a foul in the box.  This gave the Athena's a penalty kick, which Makella Brems would put away beating Cruz on the left side with 20 seconds left before the half.

Out of the break, CMS would get a quick look from Laynee Laube who connected one off the crossbar, but she would finish on her second try in the 54th minute receiving a header from Sarah Malott in the box, which she put away that gave the Athena's a  2-0 lead.

Whittier's best chances came on identical plays where forward Tess Peppis (Eugene, OR) found herself alone on the shallow right side of the cage twice in a span of six minutes, but she was denied by Morgan McCoy both times who positioned herself to cut off both angles.

With the loss Whittier drops to 7-3, 4-3 SCIAC and sits in 3rd Place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings.

Shots were dead even for the game at 18 apiece, but on corner kicks, CMS held the 10-1 advantage.  Cruz finished with four saves on the evening, while Shipherd led the offense with six shots.

The Poets return to action this Saturday, October 10 as they travel to Claremont, Calif. to take on Pomona-Pitzer beginning at 11:00am.
