ORANGE, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Soccer team saw their winning streak snapped at five games Wednesday afternoon as they fell 1-0 to Chapman University on the road being handed their first loss of 2015.
The Poets still remain atop the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings as they drop to 5-1, 2-1 SCIAC, while Chapman drops to 4-3, 1-2 SCIAC.
This marks the first time the Poets have been shut out on the season as Kortney Kingsmore's late header in the 80th minute secured the Panthers first conference victory.
Molly Simpson set up the goal as she gained possession in the middle of the field and drove to the right of the 18-yard box. She sent a cross back into the middle of the box and found the head of Kingsmore. Her close range header squeaked through the hands of Whittier keeper Alexi Cruz (Long Beach, Calif.) for the match's only score. It was only the second goal the Poets have surrendered this season.
The Panthers nearly scored again as sophomore Lara Jacobson touched a shot past Cruz, who had come well off her line, but the Whittier's back line was able to sweep the ball away just before it found the net.
Whittier managed to get just one shot off for the game, well below their 9.3 average in conference and it came in the second half from Miranda Yzabal (Whittier, Calif.), which was saved by CU keeper Kristin Kleinow.
Whittier looks to bounce back as they travel to Redlands, Calif. this Sunday, September 27 as they take on the University of Redlands beginning at 7:00pm.
