ORANGE, Calif. – Senior Francesca Escobedo (Fontana, Calif.) lifted the Poets to a 1-0 road victory over Chapman University Saturday evening at Wilson Field.
Whittier got out of their run of three ties in their last six matches to improve to 4-4-4, 2-3-3 SCIAC, while Chapman drops to 5-6-1, 2-5-1 SCIAC.
The Purple & Gold needed a much needed victory and earned it on a nice cool evening in Orange. Despite being outshot 17-12 and being edged on corner kicks 6-4, Whittier found a way to weather the storm and steal the victory in the 63rd minute.
Escobedo had a 1 v 1 with the center back who she beat and went low corner for the game winner past Panther keeper Kristin Kleinow.
Alexi Cruz (Long Beach, Calif.) finished with four saves for the game and picked up her fourth shutout on the season, while Lauren Kai (Torrance, Calif.) was back in action and took five shots with three being on goal.
Whittier returns to action this Wednesday, October 12 as they travel to La Verne to take on the Leopards beginning at 7:00pm.
