CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Soccer team went to overtime Wednesday afternoon as they played to a scoreless draw with Pomona-Pitzer handing them their first non-victory of the season.
Whittier moves to 3-2-2, 1-1-1 SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer, the favorite to win the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship moves to 4-1-1, 2-0-1 SCIAC.
Despite being outshot 25-3 and being edged on corner kicks 7-3, the Poets defensive stood strong for their third shutout on the season.
Alexi Cruz (Long Beach, Calif.) was big between the posts finishing with nine saves to anchor the defense as they prove to be one of the toughest defenses in the conference holding opponents to a mere .069 shot percentage and a 0.94 goals against average.
The Sagehens struck the post twice in the second half but came away empty as they combined for four on frame for the game.
Shots for the game came from Clarissa Field (Whittier, Calif.), Leila Afrasiyabi (Los Angeles, Calif.), and Kaela Reisfelt (Beverly Hills, Calif.).
Whittier remains on the road this Saturday, September 24 as they take on Redlands beginning at 7:00pm.
