REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Soccer team put together a comeback Saturday evening against the University of Redlands but came away with a tie following 110:00 minutes of play.
The tie marks the second in a row for the Purple & Gold and third for the season as they move to 3-2-3, 1-1-2 SCIAC.
Leah Kolek (Diamond Bar, Calif.) had the equalizer with ten minutes to play in regulation.
Kolek took advantage of a deflection off of Bulldog keeper Hannah Menk with a one-touch goal following a shot from Francesca Escobedo (Fontana, Calif.).
This would send the game into overtime, the first OT session for UR on the season. During extra time, Whittier would unleash four shots on goal outshooting Redlands 6-1 but Menk would come up with some big saves between the posts that kept the Poets at bay.
UR got on the scoreboard first in the fourth minute. A foul in the box would give the Bulldogs an early penalty kick, which Hayley Romo would convert. This lead would hold going into the half despite WC holding an advantage on shots 9-5.
In the second, Whittier remained aggressive unloading with 15 shots compared to the Bulldogs three but somehow UR was able to weather the storm until the 80th minute when Kolek added her second goal of the season.
Alexi Cruz (Long Beach, Calif.) finished with six saves for the game, while Lauren Kai (Torrance, Calif.) registered a career high 11 shots.
Escobedo totaled four shots with three being on goal, while Kaela Reisfelt (Beverly Hills, Calif.) finished with three.
Whittier returns to action this Wednesday, September 28 as they host Occidental College beginning at 7:00pm.
