CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Soccer team was shutout on the road Wednesday evening as they fell 1-0 to Claremont-M-S.
The Purple & Gold remain in the hunt for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Post Season Tournament berth despite dropping to 10-7, 6-7 SCIAC. Their winning streak has been snapped at five games and they drop the season series with the Athenas.
The lone goal for the game came early in the first half from Sarah Malott who followed a save by Poet keeper Lyla Matar (Glendale, Calif.) slotting it to the corner off the rebound.
The Poets and Athenas played a tight contest all night. WC took eight shots in the first half to CMS' five but only one found the frame once, which came in the 2nd minute from Sophie Nicotero (Sun City, Calif.).
Out of the break, Lauren Kai (Torrance, Calif.) opened up with a strike forcing Athena keeper Claire Hamson to come up with a save. Later in the half at the 80:38 mark, Leah Kolek (Diamond Bar, Calif.) had the final look on goal for the equalizer getting a header on frame, but again Hamson would deny it, keeping the shutout intact.
Matar finished with five saves for the game against six shots. Miranda Yzabal (Whittier, Calif.) finished with three shots for the game, while Kolek, Jazmin Gomez (Norwalk, Calif.), and Kai each added two.
Whittier finished outshooting Claremont-M-S 12-11 but was at a disadvantage on corner kicks at 6-4.
Whittier remains on the road this Saturday, October 28 as they have their final regular season contest against Cal Lutheran University beginning at 7:00pm.
