WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Soccer team put together a late comeback Saturday night but couldn't complete it as they fell 2-1 to the University of La Verne.
With the game all tied up at 1-1 and under five minutes left in regulation, Katherine Obregon sent in a corner kick far post, which found Alina Cobian's head for the game-winner.
Whittier now drops to 5-2, 2-2 SCIAC, while La Verne improves to 5-0-2, 2-0-2 SCIAC.
The game was back and forth throughout with the first two goals of the game coming on penalty kicks. ULV took the lead :25 seconds into the second half with Whittier being called for a foul in the box, which Anna Ottley finished to put the Leos on top 1-0.
It looked like that goal would stand for the game-winner but the Poets would catch a break in the 78th minute when the Leopards returned the favor being called for a foul in the box as well giving the Poets a look for the equalizer.
Lauren Kai (Torrance, Calif.) took advantage and put the ensuing PK away that deadlocked the game.
Whittier was aggressive for the game outshooting La Verne 16-11 but was at a disadvantage on corner kicks at 9-4. Leah Kolek (Diamond Bar, Calif.), Kai, and Clarissa Terris (Whittier, Calif.) each finished with three shots a piece to lead the offense, while Stella Thermos (Seal Beach, Calif.) picked up two saves in the loss.
Whittier remains on the road this Wednesday, September 27 as they take on Pomona-Pitzer beginning at 4:00pm.
