CLAREMONT, Calif. (Sept. 8, 2021) – Freshman goalkeeper Arizbeth Juarez (Whittier, Calif. / California) of the Whittier College women's soccer team added to her early-season save count, stopping eight shots at No. 22 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Wednesday night.
Juarez split her saves evenly between both halves, and an additional ninth defensive save was accrued by junior midfielder Audrey Jeltema (Ladera Ranch, Calif. / Tesoro) in the 19th minute. The Poets played from behind for most of the game, but Juarez and her backline began to round into form as time transpired, holding the Athenas off the scoreboard for the final 47 minutes. At the same time, the visitors applied pressure to CMS during the first 45 minutes where they earned five corner kicks. Meanwhile, Whittier's only shot on goal of the game came courtesy of freshman forward Elizabeth Roybal (West Covina, Calif. South Hills) in the sixth minute in a sequence where she fired consecutive shots, the latter which was blocked.
Head Coach Derek Hanks and the Poets will next play host to the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens, the third-ranked team in Division III, in a non-conference tilt on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 11 a.m.
