Poets Draw First-Place Sagehens, 0-0

Box Score

WHITTIER, Calif. (Oct. 12, 2022) - Whittier earned a 0-0 draw against first-place Pomona-Pitzer Wednesday night at Memorial Stadium.

Poets goalkeeper senior Vanessa Martinez posted her third consecutive shutout and sixth of the season, saving all 10 shots that came her way. She leads the SCIAC in saves (64) and ranks second in save percentage (.865), is tied for most wins (7) and shutouts, and is tied for second in minutes played (1080:00).

"It felt good. It was a big, whole-team performance" Martinez said of the match. "Coach Derek had a good game plan, and I think we did very well executing it all over the field. So many girls had amazing performances to contribute to the 90-minute fight."

Martinez said her saves in the 30th and 76th minute stood out. In the 30th minute, the senior jumped and deflected a shot over the crossbar. In the 76th, she left her feet to make another incredible save on a well-placed shot. Martinez also recorded a critical save in the 89th minute on a hard, tailing drive from distance.

The offensive chances were even Wednesday, as the Poets had nine shots on goal compared to the Sagehens' 10.

The women next travel to Ernie Chapman Stadium Saturday, Oct. 15 to face the Panthers at 11 a.m.
