Whittier Starts Strong Against Puget Sound, Can't Finish

TACOMA, Wash. (Nov. 26, 2022)  The Poets started out hot on the road against the University of Puget Sound but ran out of steam, falling 84-49. Game highlights can be viewed HERE.

Whittier led 17-7 with 4:50 left in the first quarter, its largest lead of the game, and held a 20-16 advantage after the first. However, momentum shifted in the second quarter, as Puget Sound outscored the road team 21-3 in the second quarter off turnovers. Overall Saturday afternoon, the Loggers outscored the Poets 36-11 off turnovers.

The Poets recorded 28 turnovers and were outscored off the bench, 31-4. The Loggers drilled 15 of their first 25 shots from behind the three-point line and 16-for-32 overall in the game. Offensive rebounding was another area where Puget Sound dominated, 17-4.

Junior transfer wing Lalli Gurrola led the Poets in scoring, pouring in 15 for the second consecutive game, again draining five three-pointers. The San Diego native logged 38 minutes, tops for Whittier in the contest.

Senior Lizzie Scriven had four steals for the third straight game, matching her career high. She also had a team-high four assists.

Senior Lainie James made two more long balls, giving her 11 this week and 20 already this season through four games.

Whittier returns home Wednesday to host La Verne at 5 p.m. in the Poets' second SCIAC game of the season. See you there!
