Poets Remain Undefeated, Draw Chapman 1-1 at Home

Box Score

WHITTIER, Calif. (Sept. 17, 2022) - While the Poets did not walk off the Memorial Stadium pitch with their fifth consecutive win Saturday night, they remain undefeated after drawing Chapman 1-1.

Whittier jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a brilliant header by freshman defender Emma Tumbarello off a textbook corner kick by junior Sam Ceballos in the 20th minute.

"Sam served the perfect corner, and I was able to get a head on it," Tumbarello said.

The goal marked Tumbarello's first as a Poet.

"It was a very exciting milestone in my collegiate career," Tumbarello said. ""This is just the beginning, and I'm looking forward to our group surpassing our goals."

Senior goalkeeper Vanessa Gonzalez was outstanding again, saving 10 of 11 shots on goal she faced. The only score she allowed came in the 71st minute at the foot of Jenna Urrabazo.

Whittier brings its 4-0-1 record home Wednesday night at 7 p.m. to play Cal Lutheran.
