LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (Oct. 2, 2023) – Freshman
Madeline Traylor (Covina, Calif. / Charter Oak) of the Whittier College women's soccer team parlayed her huge game at the University of Redlands on Saturday afternoon into conference recognition, as she was named SCIAC Offensive Athlete of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Traylor not only keyed the Poets at Redlands with four goals, but also added a fifth goal earlier in the week during Whittier's 4-2 victory at Caltech. The Poets entered this past week with a record of 1-3-2, and needed a shot in the arm offensively with just three collective goals over the previous four games. Traylor, along with her sister, junior
Layla Traylor (Covina, Calif. / Charter Oak), and the rest of the Whittier women's soccer team provided that in spades, as they went on to total 10 goals between the Caltech and Redlands games to nearly triple their season total in just two games.
The freshman forward struck early at Redlands, but with the game knotted at 3-3, Traylor hit a new gear and went on to score the go-ahead goal as well as two more insurance goals to seal the deal for the Poets. With six goals now to her name, Traylor will hope to carry her momentum into future contests,as the Poets have quickly re-inserted themselves into the SCIAC Postseason Tournament conversation.
Traylor is not the only Poet to earn SCIAC recognition this week, but alongside junior libero
Nadine Oronoz of the women's volleyball team, she is one of the first two Poets to be recognized in the conference's weekly awards.
Traylor and the Poets will look to keep up their winning ways when they host California Lutheran University on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m.
