The Whittier College women's soccer team was shut out in their
second game of the season, losing 9-0 to the visiting Chapman
University Panthers on September 5.
Eight different players scored for Chapman, beginning in the 9th
minute of play when Allison O'Neill tallied her first goal of the
season. Hannah Rogers added another for the Panthers in the
23rd minute and Brittni Botterill scored two minutes later for the
early 3-0 lead. Alicia Fraticelli scored the first of her two
goals in the 31st minute. She would also finish the game with
an assist. Chapman scored again in the 38th minute to
take a 5-0 lead at halftime. Fraticelli's second goal came
just three minutes into the second half before the Panthers would
score three more in the 63rd, 69th and 77th minutes to cap off
the 9-0 victory.
The Poets were out shot 28-1 in the game and Lowhren Aceves '10
made seven saves for the Poets. Despite the lopsided score
line, first-year Whittier head coach Nicole Gervais saw some bright
spots in the Poets play. "After a shaky season start on
Friday, we regrouped and focused on tenacity and the idea of
leaving everything on the field," she said. "We fought on for
90 minutes. The defensive line won 9 offside calls. The midfield
continually clamped down and forced Chapman to make errors. When we
had the ball, we moved forward as a collective unit and threatened
a number of times."
The Poets look for their first win of the season when they are in
action once again, taking on San Diego Christian College at home on
September 8th at 2pm.
