Whittier College Women's Soccer took a brief hiatus from SCIAC
play for a rematch with Southern California rival Chapman
University on October 4. In their first meeting of the
season, the Poets (0-9) fell just short in their come from behind
attempt, losing 3-2. Whittier fell behind again in this one
and ultimately lost 6-2.
Chapman (6-7) wasted no time building their lead. They scored
in the game's first five minutes, and then again in the
13th minute of action. Play evened out for the
rest of the half, with the Poets getting a number of offensive
opportunities as well. They took six shots in the first half,
their highest shot total of any half this season. Chapman
took ten first half shots, and connected with one more goal in the
43rd minute, taking a 3-0 lead into the locker room.
The Panthers got a quick start in the second half as well.
Alicia Fraticelli scored less then two minutes into the final
stanza to take a 4-0 lead. The Poets finally broke through in
the 50th minute, when Allie Nicholson '12 scored an
unassisted goal. But Chapman stymied the Poet comeback with
another goal in the 64th minute by Stephanie
Lambrakis. The Poets scored one more in the 67th
minute on an Amanda Martinez '10 penalty kick, but it was too
little, too late. Chapman scored once more in the
83rd minute to complete the 6-2 victory.
The Poets had eleven shots in the game, their highest shot total in
any game this season. Whittier goalkeeper Lea Betsworth '12
made two saves in the loss.
Whittier returns to SCIAC play in their next game as they square
off with the University of La Verne. Kick off from Graham
Soccer Field is scheduled for 7:00pm.
